Today we\u2019re revealing some shocking stats on how the pandemic has affected searches for travel in the UK &#8211; positively and negatively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying in the UK is on the rise<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6084 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1667\" height=\"1667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-01.jpg 1667w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-01-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-01-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-01-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-01-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1667px) 100vw, 1667px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public attitude towards travel is a delicate situation right now &#8211; with fears around personal health when boarding a plane, worries about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/5876\/revealed-brits-top-travel-fear-in-2021\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel companies going bust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the potential for you and your family to have to quarantine with no prior warning when you land back on familiar soil, that\u2019s if you can even get away in the first place, people are turning to holidays closer to home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a staggering 5 times more searches for holidays closer to home since lockdown has ended: from January to July, <strong>searches for \u201cstaycation\u201d have risen by 517%<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the year on year stats show <strong>a huge increase of 236%<\/strong> from July 2019 to July 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Searches for \u201cUK travel\u201d have also <strong>increased by a whopping 2500%<\/strong> year on year!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, the UK goes against the grain in this respect: there is an expected net increase in travel in our own country in the UK, whereas in Germany and the US, common public opinion is that they will travel less in their own country post-pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Searches for City Breaks are down<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6082 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1667\" height=\"1667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-02.jpg 1667w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-02-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-02-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-02-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-02-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1667px) 100vw, 1667px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, the leading type of holiday in the UK was city breaks, with almost half of Brits (46%) choosing to take their hard-earned annual leave on city breaks. That\u2019s no surprise with the high density of shopping, eateries and cultural experiences located in city centres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in 2020 the world is a very different place. Worries over crowded spaces as well as personal health have led to people escaping the cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Searches for <strong>city breaks are down by a staggering 93%<\/strong> from 33,100 at the beginning of the year to 2400 searches in June.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People are choosing tents and cottages over hotels<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6081 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1667\" height=\"1667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-03.jpg 1667w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-03-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-03-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-03-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-03-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1667px) 100vw, 1667px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type of accommodation really does matter right now: there\u2019s been an <strong>80% decrease in searches for hotels<\/strong> from February to June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, at least 4 times more people than ever before are dusting off their tents and going out camping, from 40,500 searches at the beginning of the year to 201,000 searches in July &#8211; <strong>an increase of 396%<\/strong>. At least the weather is on our side!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to that, nearly twice as many people are looking for holiday cottages, holiday homes and holiday lodges in July 2020, with <strong>an increase of 83%<\/strong> in searches year on year for these terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data reveals that use of public transport has declined<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6083 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1667\" height=\"1667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-04.jpg 1667w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-04-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-04-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-04-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-1-04-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1667px) 100vw, 1667px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this time of year, Google is usually swamped with searches for cheap flights as we look for a sunny break, however there\u2019s been an <strong>87% decrease<\/strong> in these.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Train lines too have suffered, with searches for train times <strong>dropping by 80%<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, people are looking for alternative methods of transportation:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6080 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-2-03-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5000\" height=\"3333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-2-03-1.jpg 5000w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-2-03-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-2-03-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Schofields-Insurance-UK-Travel-2020-Image-2-03-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 5000px) 100vw, 5000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to our survey, <strong>59% of people would choose a road trip by car<\/strong> rather than catching a plane, train or bus for 2020. Our reports have definitely shone a positive light on some areas though. Fortunately, we\u2019re not expecting this crisis to be the end of city breaks forever &#8211; there\u2019s already a slight upturn in the figures for July and August, seeing people return to cities thanks to government schemes supporting eateries and small businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re very pleased about the continued growth of staycations and travel in the UK. We have a lot to offer in terms of culture, diversity and the ability to experience the great outdoors. Holiday home owners have been making huge efforts to ensure that their guests will feel comfortable when away from home with the best measures put in place for their health and safety.
