Somewhere you may have painstakingly renovated from a ruin, where you spend many hours meticulously cleaning and preparing for guests or a special place you intend to retire.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, some guests don\u2019t abide by a \u2018treat it as you would your own home\u2019 rule when renting holiday homes. By opening your holiday cottage to strangers, you\u2019re opening yourself up to disgusting guests and bizarre behaviour.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>The strange, stupid and disgusting things guests do<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve scoured the internet to collect stories of disgusting and bizarre guest behaviour. If you have been renting out your holiday home for several years then you are likely to have experienced some of these.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Strange guest behaviour<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dirty dishes are put back in the cupboard between the clean ones.<\/li>\n<li>Boiled eggs left in the kettle.<\/li>\n<li>Getting fake-tan\/hair dye on towels and bed sheets.<\/li>\n<li>Missing the toilet and leaving poo on the floor.<\/li>\n<li>Guests have the heating, log burner or air conditioning on full with the windows wide open<\/li>\n<li>Checkout instructions are to lock the door and place keys in the key safe, but guests departed, leaving the keys on the table and the door unlocked.<\/li>\n<li>The guest checked out and left the shower running.<\/li>\n<li>Allow pets on furniture and beds.<\/li>\n<li>Phoning owners repeatedly because \u2018appliances aren\u2019t working\u2019 \u2013 in reality they haven\u2019t read the user instructions or have messed about with the controls.<\/li>\n<li>Blood stains on the bed sheets duvet and mattress.<\/li>\n<li>The large chef\u2019s knife was hidden underneath the mattress.<\/li>\n<li>Bogey collection was wiped on the headboard.<\/li>\n<li>Used earplugs stuck on the back of the headboard.<\/li>\n<li>Guests brought a portable fire pit and had an open fire on the wooden decking.<\/li>\n<li>Rearranging the furniture, taking internal furniture outside and bringing outside furniture inside.<\/li>\n<li>Putting charcoal briquettes in the gas BBQ.<\/li>\n<li>Trying to light the LED candles.<\/li>\n<li>Ironing clothes on the bedroom carpet and subsequent burn marks.<\/li>\n<li>Wetting the bed, then making it.<\/li>\n<li>Washing a bike in the bath.<\/li>\n<li>Putting hot pans on wooden worktops and tables.<\/li>\n<li>Guest failed to close the shower curtain and flooded the downstairs kitchen.<\/li>\n<li>The bed frame was broken after being used as a trampoline.<\/li>\n<li>Nail clippings left down the side of the sofa.<\/li>\n<li>Electric kettle melted after being put on the gas hob.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>The worst items left behind by guests<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not only strange behaviour but guests also leave behind bizarre items:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A used disposable nappy hidden behind a curtain.<\/li>\n<li>Broken tooth.<\/li>\n<li>Dirty underwear left in the oven.<\/li>\n<li>A badger\u2019s skull.<\/li>\n<li>A sex toy in the freezer.<\/li>\n<li>Leftover rotting food in the oven.<\/li>\n<li>Used sanitary towel in the bedside drawer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The top items guests steal<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Taking items home isn\u2019t exclusive to hotels, but some holiday let guests wrongly assume it\u2019s within their right to <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">steal<\/span> take items home.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Batteries from the tv remote and the smoke detector.<\/li>\n<li>Coat hangers.<\/li>\n<li>Pillow protectors.<\/li>\n<li>Tupperware containers.<\/li>\n<li>Light bulbs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having to replace missing items during a quick changeover can set housekeepers schedules way back. Also, the next guests may be the ones who discover essential items are missing \u2013 subsequently giving a negative experience.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>What can holiday home owners do to prevent such behaviour?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Mistreatment of holiday homes is an ever-present problem for holiday home owners, and one that guests either don\u2019t seem to be aware of or have little concern about the consequences for owners.<\/p>\n<p>For owners who live on-site and witness such behaviour in person, a quiet word with guests may be enough to resolve any problems.<\/p>\n<p>But what can you do if you manage your holiday let remotely? Clearly communicate your expectations of how your property is to be treated during their stay. Outline your \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/4681\/booking-terms-conditions\/\">guest rules<\/a>\u2019 in your booking terms and conditions and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/3505\/guest-information-book\/\">welcome book<\/a> so there\u2019s no room for confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Consider taking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/blog\/1212\/holiday-letting-insurance-or-damage-deposit\/\">security deposit<\/a> and make it clear that any theft, damage or extra cleaning costs will be paid for using the security deposit. Losing their security deposit may be at the forefront of guests\u2019 minds during their stay and make them more careful.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Don\u2019t lose sleep over it<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, it comes with the territory when holiday letting \u2013 guests do stupid things and dome of their behaviour can be shocking. As you become more experienced, you will know what to expect and what you need to do to limit the effect it has on your holiday letting business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schofields.ltd.uk\/holiday-let-insurance\/\">Holiday letting insurance<\/a> can safeguard against many incidents, but insurance doesn\u2019t cover every eventuality. Deducting from a security deposit can also be justified in certain circumstances, but more often than not you will just have to accept it, learn from it, and move on.<\/p>\n<p>If it makes you feel better, then have \u2018a rant\u2019 with fellow owners on holiday rental forums and Facebook groups to share your feelings. Writing an email outlining your grievances that you would\u00a0<em>like<\/em>\u00a0to send to guests also helps, but\u00a0<em>don\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0send it. Simply writing it should make you feel better about the situation.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of guests are lovely, but some will make you question why you rent out your holiday home.
