Burst pipes – 3000 claims in one day
Finally, after weeks of freezing temperatures the mercury is beginning to rise, but be aware, as the thaw begins frozen pipes often burst.
Most insurers are experiencing large volumes of claims following the big freeze. In fact, whilst discussing a holiday home burst pipe claim, our loss adjusters commented that one insurer received 3,000 claims on Friday.
Have you checked your holiday home?
Due to second homes being left empty for long periods, the damage caused by burst pipes can go undiscovered for days, even weeks. During this time hundreds of gallons of water can cause widespread destruction, costing thousands.
As frozen water pipes begin to thaw they often burst, so it is essential that your keyholder checks your second home daily. Although this may not prevent a burst, it can help reduce the extent of damage caused.
Also, check your guttering for signs of damage from the weight of ice and snow.
My pipes are frozen – what should I do?
This previous post gives advice on what to do when pipes freeze, but the most important messages is to switch the water supply off straight away.
How to prevent frozen pipes
Each year during the winter months in the UK we experience freezing temperatures. As with last year’s artic conditions, this year’s sub zero temperatures seem to be the norm. With this in mind it’s essential to take precautions to prevent frozen pipes and bursts at your holiday home.
During periods of unoccupancy in the winter inspect your property regularly, consider draining the water and heating system or leave your heating on – even if it is not an unoccupancy condition listed in your policy.
Why? as a policyholder you have a responsibility to take due care and reasonable steps to prevent loss or damage.
With more cold weather expected over the coming weeks/years, check that you have adequate holiday home property insurance that covers water damage following burst pipes.
